Dancing Bear Lodge is a perfect base camp for cycling enthusiasts. We have created routes starting at the lodge that will satisfy riders of all abilities. Townsend’s 9 mile paved biking trail runs right through our property and offers a scenic adventure along the Little River through Townsend. In addition to these paved trails, guests enjoy mountain biking along our property trails.

Bike Rentals We offer Trek and Cannondale touring bikes available for adults. Rental fees are $5.00 per hour, per bike. Also available for experienced cyclists, our Co-Motion Tandem Periscope 26 can be adjusted for a wide range of sizes and rents for $25 per hour. Guided cycling can be arranged and is the perfect way to see the beautiful scenery in East Tennessee. Matt Alexander, Managing Partner, is an avid cyclist and will guide you on routes tailored to your desire—short and easy or a day of climbing –we have it all right out our front door.

Hiking

Hiking offers one of the best ways to truly enjoy the natural beauty of this area. On property, we offer several trails for exploration and more than 850 miles of hiking trails are available in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Appalachian Trail offers 70 miles along the parks top ridge.

Whether your ideal excursion includes a relaxing wildflower walk or a more vigorous full day hike, we will be happy to assist you with trail maps and trail information. Following is a list of some of the park’s most popular trail options:

Alum Cave Trail - This is a 4.4 mile roundtrip hike, rated moderate. It includes Arch Rock, a natural arch, Inspiration Point, and the Alum Cave Bluff. Inspiration Point offers a spectacular view of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River's upper basin. The trail continues to Mt. Le Conte, and its beautiful viewpoints. Roundtrip distance from the parking to Le Conte is 10 miles. This trail can be icy in winter.

Andrews Bald - A 3.6 mile roundtrip hike, rated moderate. This hike heads down slope to a bald. Excellent views open to the south, toward Fontana Lake, and in early summer the azaleas explode with color. The trail head is located at the end of Clingmans Dome Road, which is closed from December through March.

Charlies Bunion - This 8-mile roundtrip hike is rated strenuous. Following the Appalachian Trail, this hike goes out to rocky crags along the state-line ridge. It has excellent views. This trail can be icy in winter.

Fly Fishing

The Angler’s art of casting or throwing of a fishing line with finesse and aplomb, the graceful use of wrist and arm and line in the act of wading streams and catching fish with man-tied flies, you will enjoy a fantastic fly fishing experience during your visit at Dancing Bear Lodge!

The Little River is located on our property directly across the street from the lodge and 2,115 miles of streams are available within the neighboring Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The national park protects one of the last wild trout habitats in the Eastern U.S. and offers a wide variety of angling experiences from remote headwater trout streams to large, cool water small mouth bass streams. Most streams remain at or near their carrying capacity of fish year-round.

Whether you are a veteran angler or a first time caster, our Orvis-certified guides will lead you on a memorable fly fishing journey on your choice during a half or full day guided trip.

We provide all of the equipment necessary including waders, flies, vests, rods and reels.
